Western Conference captain Vakarau Tauyasa led from the front with an unbeaten 43 to take his team to victory on the opening day of the Under 19 All Stars tournament in Fiji.

The right-handed batsman was in top form as he authored a three-wicket win for his side over Northern Conference at the Suva Grammar ground. Opting to bat first, Northern Conference made 61 following a delayed start owing to early rain. Tauyasa and Nacanieli Bola were the best of the bowlers with two wickets apiece.

In its chase, Western was in trouble after losing four quick wickets, but Tauyasa held his nerves. For Northern Conference, Noa Aeawei and Josefa Gauna took two wickets apiece.

The tournament is an important selection trial as the Fiji national selectors get down to name a 18-man squad to represent the country at the Under 19 ICC EAP tournament in Australia in February.
