Canada sets Afghanistan 494 runs for victory in Sharjah
Ryan ten Doeschate's heroics failed to stop Kenya from securing a first-innings lead against Netherlands on the penultimate day of the four-day first-class ICC Intercontinental Cup match at Nairobi Gymkhana, Nairobi on Monday.
The 29-year-old all-rounder followed up his 214 not out with figures of 5-104 but a century by David Obuya and five other half-centuries ensured Kenya responded bravely to the visitors, score of 385 with 433 that gave it a 48-run first-innings lead.
While Obuya failed to add to his overnight score of 115, his brother Collins scored 89, James Kamanade hit 75, captain Maurice Ouma contributed 52 and Nehemiah Odhiambo chipped in with 50.
For ten Doeschate, it was the sixth time he had taken a five-wicket haul which has lifted his tally of first-class wickets to 129 from 70 matches. The Essex all-rounder added the prized scalps of Obuya, Hiren Varaiya (0), Ouma and Kamande after having picked up the wicket of Rakep Patel on Sunday evening.
The home side, which started the day at 235-2, was in some bother when it slipped to 244-5 in the first half hour,s play but Kamande and Ouma put on 90 runs for the sixth wicket to ensure the home side overtook the tourists, first innings score.
When the stumps were drawn for the third day, Netherlands had reached 178-0 with openers Eric Szwarczynski batting on a career-best 89 and Alexei Kervezee unbeaten on 85 to set up an exciting last day,s play as the visitors lead by 130 runs with all 10 wickets in hand.
At Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium, Afghanistan was battling to save its match against Canada after being set a victory target of 494 runs. When play ended, the Asian side was 40-0 with Karim Sadiq on 29 not out and Noor Ali on 11 not out.
Earlier, Afghanistan resumed its first innings at 110-3 in reply to Canada,s 566 and was all out for 264. Opener Shabir Noori top-scored with 60 while Mohammad Nabi made 48.
Wickets were evenly shared between the Canadian bowlers with Nitish Kumar finishing as the pick of bowlers with 3-58 while Sandeep Jyoti bagged 2-45 and Umar Bhatti took 2-61.
Instead of enforcing a follow-on after earning a 302-run first innings lead, Canada opted to bat for the second time and declared its second innings at 191-4.
Opener Trevin Bastiampillai hit his second half-century of the match with 71 that came off 93 balls and included a six and six fours.

There will be a total of US$250,000 in prize money for the Associate and Affiliate teams taking part in the ICC Intercontinental Cup with US$100,000 for the winners and US$40,000 for the runners-up.
Having previously been designed around a two-group, three-day format, the event then evolved into an eight-team, round-robin and truly global tournament featuring four-day cricket which gives those teams who do not play Test cricket the chance to experience the longer form of the game.
This year,s format include seven teams (Afghanistan, Canada, Ireland, Kenya, Netherlands, Scotland and Zimbabwe XI), while the new competition, the ICC Intercontinental Shield, involves the four teams below that, namely Bermuda, Namibia, Uganda and the United Arab Emirates.
Scotland won the first ICC Intercontinental Cup in 2004, beating Canada in the final, while Ireland has been victorious in all three events since then, beating Kenya in the 2005 decider, Canada in the 2006-07 event and Namibia in 2007-08.
