Thailand defeat Canada in completed game by 13 runs
The second Shield semi-final was completed today as Canada beat Thailand by 13 runs at Malahide after play was abandoned yesterday due to rain.
Returning for a 1000 start, Canada required 93 runs for victory in 18 overs. Getting off to a quick start Monali Patel (20) took the attack to the Canadian bowlers scoring 4 fours in 22 balls, before she was bowled by Boochatham. It was the second wicket for Boochatham who had bowled Coulter (0) earlier on. Thailand slowed the game down as another wicket fell for Canada, Sivanantham (7) came down the wicket, only to miss the ball and get stumped by Prathanmitr, Canada were on 31 runs for 3 wickets in 6.4 overs.
In the fourteenth over it swung into Thailand’s favour with two wickets falling in three balls. First, captain Mikaela Turik (14) hit the ball high in the air off Sangsoma and it was caught by Saengsakaorat, two balls later Mahewish Khan (0) was run out by some good work in the field by the Thai team. The Canadian wickets started tumbling as White (3) was bowled by Konchan. Then two more run outs Tittlemier (2) and Bartholemew (1), leaving Canada on 70 runs for 8 wickets still needing 23 runs from 14 balls. Shabbir who had put in a steady batting performance (18 not out) tried desperately to score the runs, but it was a step too far for the Canadian team who fell short of the total and celebrations for Thailand who won by 13 runs. Thailand will now play Zimbabwe in the Shield final and Canada will play Japan in the 3rd/4th Shield play off.
Yesterday Thailand had completed their innings scoring 92 runs for 6 wickets in its 18 overs. Thailand batted slowly with decent contributions from the top order Prathanmitr (10) and Chaiwai (15). Then in the twelfth over Tippoch (10) was run out as Bootchatham drove the ball, the bowler Patel touched the ball onto the non-strikers stumps and Tippoch returned to the pavilion. Next ball, Boochatham (0) skipped down the wicket as the ball turned and Sivanantham took the bails off behind by the stumps. Chanida Sutthiruang (23 not out) got the Thai team up to a respectable score hitting 3 fours, Thailand finishing on 92 for 6, before rain fell and abandoned the match.
