Tharanga seeks elusive World Cup ton
Sri Lanka opening batsman Upul Tharanga is desperate to score a World Cup century, having already racked up nine tons in his one-day international career.
Tharanga, 26, opened in the 2007 World Cup with veteran Sanath Jayasuriya, and made three 50s as his team reached the final.
Now he is hoping to reach the century landmark in the glamour clash against Pakistan on Saturday.
"Playing well to get a 100 in this World Cup is one of my targets," the left-hand batsman said Wednesday during the team's practice at Colombo's Sinhalese Sports Club.
Tharanga scored just 19 in Sunday's opening game against Canada in Hambantota, before he was run-out.
"The run-out was unfortunate. I hope to do better against Pakistan."
Sri Lanka take on Pakistan in both team's second game at the renovated Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday.
Despite losing key players Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer after the spot-fixing scandal that rocked world cricket last year, Tharanga said Pakistan remain a formidable force.
"They are unpredictable, but have a good bowling attack. There is no extra pressure on us, but it's good to play Pakistan here, in front of a supportive home crowd."
