Titans and Daredevils claim opening day wins
There were victories for Titans and Delhi Daredevils as the Champions League Twenty20 got underway on Saturday.
Titans and Perth Scorchers opened up proceedings at Centurion with the South African team's win underpinned by a first-wicket stand of 109 between Jacques Rudolph (83 not out off 59 balls) and Henry Davids (54 off 38 balls).
Perth restricted their opponent to 58 in the last eight overs as Titans closed on 163-4. Nathan Rimmington was the pick of the Australian team's bowlers with 2-20.
Perth's run-chase never threatened to overhaul the Titans effort with only Mitchell Marsh (52 not out off 41 balls) showing any permanence as they limped to 124-7 at the end of their 20 overs to lose by 39 runs.
In the battle of the IPL teams, Delhi Daredevils overwhelmed Kolkata Knight Riders by 52 runs
The Daredevils made 160-8 after being put into bat. Making a return to high-profile action, after a period of international exile from the England team, Kevin Pietersen was dropped twice by the time he reached 11 but the misses didn't prove costly as Brett Lee removed him on 14. Unmukt Chand, who came to prominence as captain of India's victorious ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in August, top-scored with 40 off 27 balls while Ross Taylor hit 36 off 24 balls. Sunil Narine continued where he left off in the ICC World Twenty20 with 3-21 while Lee was the most economical bowler, returning figures of 1-21 from his four overs.
KKR suffered a disastrous start to their reply ? losing three wickets and Jacques Kallis to a finger injury inside the first two overs. Kallis was sent to hospital for a precautionary x-ray and South Africa, as well as KKR, will be hoping for positive news. Manoj Tiwary (33) and Rajat Bhatia (26) brought some respectability to the innings in a 47-run stand for the fifth-wicket but they fell well short on 108-7.
Irfan Pathan (2-20), Morne Morkel (2-25) and Umesh Yadav (2-13) all picked up two wickets.
