Trescothick reflects on England’s tough day at Gabba
The England assistant coach gives an honest assessment as the hosts tighten their grip in the second Ashes Test.
With Australia having dominated the proceedings on Day 3 in the ongoing second Ashes Test, England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick was all praise for the hosts.
Speaking to TNT Sports at the end of the day’s play, he said, “They've been better than us today, and they've dominated today.
"They've put us under a lot of pressure, and it's always challenging when that happens."
Despite losing Alex Carey early on Day 3 at the Gabba, Australia recovered to put together a formidable total of 511. Meanwhile, England found themselves stranded at 134/6 at the end of the day’s play.
Mitchell Starc (77) and Scott Boland (21) put up a massive partnership of 75 runs for the ninth wicket as the hosts posted a lead of 177 runs at the end of their innings.
The Aussie pacers would then run riot with the ball, running through the England top order.
England had got off to a good start in their second innings as they racked up 48 runs in their first seven overs. However, Scott Boland broke the opening partnership with a ripper as he knocked over Ben Duckett (15).
Michael Neser then removed Zak Crawley (44) and Ollie Pope (26) in the space of four overs as England found themselves at 97/3 in the drinks break of the final session.
Joe Root (15) and Jamie Smith (4) were caught behind by Alex Carey off Mitchell Starc, leaving England in a precarious position with their final established batting pair of Will Jacks and Ben Stokes on the pitch at the end of the day, while still trailing the hosts by 43 runs.
Despite the setback, Trescothick stressed that England will still be eyeing a win as they take the field on Day 4.
“We've still got an opportunity here. Yes, we're behind still in the context of the game,”
“We've got to come out tomorrow, try and get a partnership going with the last few wickets that we have, and get a total on the board that we can maybe have a little dart at.”
Australia lead the five-match ICC World Test Championship series 1-0 having clinched the first Test in Perth.
