Trott and Afghanistan to part ways after 2026 T20 World Cup
Appointed head coach in 2022, Jonathan Trott has overseen a period of growth for Afghanistan cricket, producing major results on the world stage.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on Monday confirmed that head coach Jonathan Trott’s tenure will officially conclude following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to take place in February.
The board stated that the decision is part of its long-term strategy for the next phase of the national team’s development.
Trott, who took charge of the Afghanistan national team in 2022, has been instrumental in shaping the side over the past few years. Under his guidance, Afghanistan achieved several notable results, including victories over higher-ranked opponents and memorable performances in tournaments that have enhanced the team’s international reputation.
A highlight of Trott's tenure saw Afghanistan seal their first-ever T20 World Cup semi-final finish in 2024.

Trott, who represented England in 52 Tests and 68 ODIs before turning to coaching, expressed gratitude for his time with Afghanistan and lauded the players’ determination.
“It has been a privilege to work with the Afghanistan National Team and to witness their passion, resilience, and hunger to achieve greatness.
"I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and I will always remain a supporter of Afghan cricket. I wish the team and the Afghan people continued success in the years ahead,” Trott said.
Adding on their strategy following the next year's World Cup with a the transition in the picture, the ACB stated, "Just as teams evolve, so do their leadership and strategic needs. No international side remains under a single coach forever, and this change marks a new chapter for Afghanistan as the Board continues building toward long-term excellence."
In their recent outing, Afghanistan sealed a 3-0 T20I series sweep over Zimbabwe. Having finished in the top four during the previous edition of the tournament, the Asian side will be among the sides to watch out in next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
