Uganda defeat tournament hosts

The hosts now leave the tournament with four losses in as many games having finished bottom of Group A and being undone by an impressive Uganda outfit here today.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Sterre Kalis and captain Heather Siegers got Netherlands off to a solid start with an 85-run opening stand. They didn’t have it all their own way, however, with the Ugandan bowlers bowling economically but without reward in terms of wickets.

Only 14 runs were scored between overs six and nine, but 45 came off the next five overs, although Rita Musamali bowled Siegers (46 from 43 balls) in the 13th, who tried to scoop a full and straight delivery but failed to connect. With wickets in hand, it was a risk they could afford to take.

Only 11 runs were added between overs 17 and 19 with Immaculate Nakisuuyi and Carol Namugenyi bowling tight lines, the latter claiming the wicket of Kalis (43 from 48 deliveries), who skipped down the track and flicked the ball with her pads before a smart run out by keeper Kevin Awino.

Nakisuuyi removed Denise Hannema with a slow, flighted delivery that resulted in a simple stumping, as the Netherlands finished on 118/3.

In reply, Getrude Candiru led Uganda’s chase, with an undefeated 43 at just over a run a ball, which comprised three fours. She was brought to the crease in the third over when Janet Mbabazi was run out.

In the sixth over, Rachael Ntono missed a straight full-toss and was trapped lbw by Caroline de Fouw to make it 29/2, before a decent partnership between all-rounder Immaculate Nakisuuyi (27 from 28 deliveries) and the assured Candiru ushered Uganda into a strong position.

Nakisuuyi was removed by Cher van Slobbe after Mariska Kornet grabbed a skier in the 15th over, and Frankline Najjumba was run out in the eighteenth, But Uganda kept their cool and saw their team over the line with 9 deliveries to spare.
