Uganda face Thailand in crucial battle
Overview
Uganda Women v Thailand Women
Kampong Cricket Club, Utrecht
Match 5, WT20Q 2018
Sunday, 8 July, 10:00 GMT, 12:00 local
Uganda and Thailand go in to the second round of matches on the back of heavy defeats in the opening games of this ICC Women’s World T20 Qualifying tournament.
Uganda were skittled by Scotland for 43, with only two players reaching double figures, taking just one wicket in reply as the Wildcats cruised home to a nine-wicket victory inside just seven overs. Thailand provided more resistance in their bid to topple Ireland, but a below-par 92/7 proved too small a total as the Irish knocked off the runs with seven wickets to spare and with 22 balls remaining.
There is a must-win feel about this one, as both sides go after a needed victory to stay in with a real chance of reaching the ICC Women’s World T20.
Thailand entered these qualifiers with confidence, having defeated tournament hosts Netherlands by a convincing 46 runs in their final warm-up game. They need to rediscover that type of form to remain in the fray for qualification.
Uganda lost out to the UAE in their final practice match, but ought to draw inspiration from their famous win against Zimbabwe in the African qualifiers that granted them a place in this competition.
Key Players
Nattaya Boochatham (Thailand): The left-handed batter was exemplary in the first outing of these qualifiers against Ireland, notching a mature and dynamic 41 from 50 balls, eclipsing Thailand’s second highest individual score of 13. She will need to display this sort of form against Uganda in order to keep her side in with a chance of progressing.
Joyce Apio (Uganda): With few positives to take from the humbling against Scotland, Uganda need a change in fortunes against Thailand. The tricky 21-year old Joyce Apio was a handful with the ball in the warm-up game against the UAE, and her youthful, energetic approach could prove vital in this upcoming fixture.
