Cricket South Africa (CSA) have named Corrie van Zyl as their General Manager: Cricket.

The 50-year-old enjoyed an outstanding professional career between 1981 and 1995 but only played two ODIs due to South Africa's international ban for most of his playing days.

The right-arm pace bowler then became a successful coach, helping the Eagles to six domestic titles along with stints as assistant and interim coach of the South African national side.

Commenting on the appointment, CSA CEO Gerald Majola said: "Corrie has a distinguished record as player, coach and administrator and he will do an excellent job in taking the game forward as we pursue our vision of making cricket accessible to all and making South Africa a nation of winners.

"He will take charge of the entire development pipeline from grassroots right up to the Proteas and both he and national head coach Gary Kirsten will report directly to me in terms of our cricket structures.

"Vinnie Barnes will take charge as head coach of the High Performance Centre and the Youth Cricket Manager Niels Momberg, Senior Cricket Manager Max Jordaan and Coaching Education Manager Anton Ferreira will report directly to Corrie."

Van Zyl added: "When I decided to stand down as national cricket coach I felt I could still make a contribution to the well-being of South African cricket over a period of time and I am very excited about this new challenge.

"Our cricket is flourishing at all levels at the moment and I believe we are entering an exciting period in our young history."

Van Zyl's appointment comes two days before South Africa begin their next Test series against Sri Lanka.
