West Indies hosts New Zealand in ICC Women’s Championship
Players aim for upward movements in Reliance ICC Women’s ODI Rankings
The quest for earning direct qualification for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 continues later this week when the West Indies hosts New Zealand in the ICC Women’s Championship.
St Kitts will be the venue of the One-Day Internationals, which will be played on 12, 14 and 17 September and will count towards the ICC Women’s Championship. This series is part of round one of seven, which will conclude next month when South Africa travels to Sri Lanka for the matches to be played on 15, 17 and 19 October.
At the end of the tournament, which will span around two and a half years, the four top sides will progress to the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, while the bottom four sides will get a final chance of qualification through the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in 2017.
The West Indies and New Zealand have clashed six times since the ICC Women’s World Cup India 2013 with the former winning four matches and losing two.
Since the ICC Women’s World Cup India 2013, the West Indies has played a total of 12 ODIs and has won four matches, whereas New Zealand has won four out of six matches during the same period.
New Zealand captain Suzie Bates, previewing the series against the West Indies, said: “We played really well against them here in the summer, but we know that facing them in the Caribbean is a completely different ball game. They’ll be up for it and we’re incredibly excited about the challenge that awaits us. We’re ready to meet them head-on.”
In the Reliance ICC Women’s Player Rankings for ODI batters, New Zealand captain Suzie Bates and Stafanie Taylor of the West Indies are sitting in fourth and fifth positions, respectively while Amy Satterthwaite, who is returning to the side after missing the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014, is in 10th spot.
In the Reliance ICC Women’s Player Rankings for ODI bowlers, Taylor is holding the top spot with Shanel Daley and Anisa Mohammed in fifth and ninth positions, respectively. New Zealand’s left-arm spinner, Morna Nielsen, in 21st spot is her side’s highest-ranked bowler and will be aiming to break into the top 20.
