What to expect in the 2027 Code

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2027 Code introduces a sharper, more balanced approach to anti-doping one that combines enforcement with greater fairness and player protection.

At the core is a refined sanctioning framework intended to ensure fair and proportionate outcomes. The 2027 Code introduces greater flexibility by aligning the length of a ban more closely to a player’s level of intent. Payers may also receive a 25% reduction in sanction if they admit the violation and accept the consequences within a stipulated timeframe. This is intended to support faster case resolution. In addition, stronger penalties for aggravating circumstances will apply only where the player knowingly committed the rule violation.

While intentional doping still carries a four-year ban, the system is now more nuanced. Players who can prove how a substance entered their body and that it wasn’t performance-related may face reduced sanctions. Importantly, harsher penalties for aggravating circumstances won’t apply unless wrongdoing is clearly deliberate.

The Code also offers more ways to lower sanctions and resolve cases fairly. The definition of contamination now includes everyday sources like food, drink, or even environmental exposure. Players who admit violations early can receive reduced sanctions, while those with legitimate medical needs but missing paperwork (i.e. a Therapeutic Use Exemption) face more proportionate outcomes.

A noteworthy shift in the handling of substances of abuse, particularly relevant to Cricket given the recent rise in such cases. For first-time out-of-competition violations, sanctions are now shorter (reduced from three months to two months) with mandatory treatment no longer required. The focus is increasingly on support rather than punishment.

Accountability now extends beyond players and rightly so. Athlete Support Personnel (ASP) including coaches, doctors and trainers are held to a higher duty of care, required to complete mandatory education and are subject to automatic investigations in certain cases, particularly when minors are involved.

Finally, the 2027 updates strengthen privacy and transparency. Players found not at fault are better shielded from public disclosure, while clearer rules on participation, appeals and repeat violations make the system more consistent worldwide.

In short, the 2027 Code puts players exactly where they belong, at the centre of a sharper, fairer and more accountable anti-doping system. The ICC Anti-Doping team intends to act early, prepare thoroughly and ensure Members, players and support personnel are fully ready to meet the new standard.
