67754 New Zealand v South Africa: Semi Final - 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup

ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 finalist New Zealand will have one eye on the Reliance ICC ODI Team Rankings when it plays England in the five-match series, which starts at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Tuesday, 9 June.

Brendon McCullum’s side is ranked third on 116 points, one behind India, while Eoin Morgan’s side is ranked sixth on 94 points. If New Zealand wins all the five matches of the series, then it will be guaranteed second spot, irrespective of how the three-match series between Bangladesh and India, to be played later this month, pans out.

If New Zealand wins 4-1, then it will retain its pre-series points but will drop points in any other scenario.

On the other side of the coin, England can reduce the gap with fifth-ranked Sri Lanka from 12 points to four points if it wins all the five matches of the series. In case of such a result, New Zealand will drop to fourth place on 108 points.

A 3-2 result in England’s favour will mean the home side will rise to 98 points while New Zealand will join South Africa on 112 points but will be ranked above the Proteas when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

The Reliance ICC ODI and T20I Team Rankings predictor function is available here. The ODI and T20I tables, unlike the Test table, are updated after each match.

Meanwhile, Kane Williamson of New Zealand and England’s Steven Finn will start off as the highest-ranked batsman and bowler in the series, respectively.

Williamson is ranked seventh and has India’s Shikhar Dhawan firmly within his sights. Former New Zealand captain Ross Taylor is just outside the top 10 in 11th position and will be aiming to improve his ranking.

Other batsmen eyeing upward movements are Joe Root (16th), Martin Guptill (21st), McCullum (22nd), Jos Buttler (26th), Corey Anderson (34th), Grant Elliott (43rd) and Morgan (45th). Alex Hales is sitting in 154th position and Ben Stokes is 178th.

The list is headed by South Africa captain AB de Villiers, with Kumar Sangakkara and Hashim Amla in second and third positions, respectively.

Finn, ranked 15th, trails 12th-ranked Ravichandran Ashwin of India by 20 points and a good series will potentially move him up the ladder. Other bowlers also aiming to head in the right direction include Tim Southee (20th), Mitchell McClenaghan (35th), Chris Jordan (45th) and Nathan McCullum (46th). Stokes is outside the top 100 in 112th spot.

Mitchell Starc is the number-one ranked bowler and leads South Africa’s Imran Tahir by 49 points.
