'You can't expect more than that in a T20 game' - Shakib
Even before a ball had been bowled, the final Nidahas Trophy group game promised to be an exciting one. There was a place in Sunday’s final against India on offer, their most recent fixture had seen Bangladesh gun down a target of 215, and there was the return of the world’s best all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan. Even given this however, the fixture surpassed all expectations, with the pendulum swinging this way and that, before Mahmudullah struck the decisive blow in a charged-up finish.
“You can't expect more than that in a T20 game,” said Bangladesh captain Shakib. “There was everything. Emotions, drama, everything. We are lucky to be on the winning side.”

The first swing came in the first innings, when, having been reduced to 41/5, Sri Lanka recovered to post 159 thanks to a 97-run sixth wicket stand. “Kusal Perera and Thisara Perera batted very well,” said Shakib. “They got themselves into a winning position.”
Sri Lankan captain Thisara Perera was understandably disappointed, but even though his innings started slowly, still felt his team were in a good position at the halfway stage. “I sometimes take some time for my batting, We were 10-15 short, but 160 is a reasonable target,” he said.
The advantage continued to change hands, Bangladesh progressing to 97/2 before slipping to 109/5, when Shakib joined player of the match Mahmudullah. He revealed that their task was made harder, and their gameplan dictated, by the fact that he wasn’t fully fit, despite being cleared to play.
“I had only one hit before I came into the game, so I knew I wasn't 100%,” said Shakib. “It was important to rotate the strike and give it to Mahmudullah. This is one of our best innings in the last five overs.”
Mahmudullah praised the effect Shakib’s presence had on the team. “It’s one of my best innings” he said. “When Shakib came into the team, that was a big boost. The players were eager to do well today. My plan was to strike the ball as hard as I can. To see the ball properly and try to hit accordingly. When I and Shakib were there, I was at ease but Shakib's wicket put pressure on me. Other guys came up to me and believed that we'll do it.”
The result means Bangladesh will take India on in the final on Sunday. “India are a very good side but we have the momentum, so hopefully we can continue the performance,” said Shakib. “Hopefully the Sri Lankan crowd can come and support us!"
