Noor lifts Afghanistan spirits in Zimbabwe

Afghanistan makes 273 for the loss of two wickets

Noor lifts Afghanistan spirits in Zimbabwe - Cricket News
Noor Ali Noori of Afghanistan.
Afghanistan has made a confident start to its ICC Intercontinental Cup debut in Mutare, reaching 273 at the tea interval on day two for the loss of just two wickets.

In reply to Zimbabwe XI?s 350 all out, Afghanistan openers Noor Ali and Ahmad Shah put on 149 for the first wicket in great style with Noor kicking on after Ahmed?s departure to register his maiden first-class century on what is his debut at that level.

Noor was eventually dismissed for 130 and at tea his side was just 77 runs behind and still with eight wickets in hand.

On day one, former Zimbabwe Test captain Tatenda Taibu scored 172 as his team registered a healthy 350. Taibu?s knock lasted 211 balls and included 26 fours as none of his team-mates managed to pass 50.

He did receive some support, however, from Trevor Garwe (48) with whom he put on 124, and to a lesser extent Shingirai Masakadza (22) whose partnership was worth 79, but it was not enough for the home side to register a truly imposing total although a scoring-rate of nearly 4.3 runs per over was more than healthy.

And some of the Afghanistan bowlers did suffer from that onslaught. Hamid Hassan went for 100 off his 16 overs although that did include the wickets of Timycen Maruma and Tafadzwa Kamungozi. The pick of the bowlers were Dawlat Ahmadzai, whose 2-14 came off 8.4 overs before an injury forced him out of the attack, and Mohammad Nabi, who worked hard for his 3-90 off 28.5 overs.

ICC Intercontinental Cup (day two)
At Mutare: Zimbabwe XI 350 all out, 81.5 overs (Tatenda Taibu 172, Trevor Garwe 48; Mohammad Nabi 3-90)
Afghanistan 273-2 (Noor Ali 130, Ahmed Shah 40)
Afghanistan trails Zimbabwe XI by 77 runs with eight wickets in hand at tea on day two

Note: Technical problems currently being experienced in Zimbabwe mean it is impossible to relay live scores to the ICC website as planned. We are, however, working hard to remedy the problem. The full scorecard for the Zimbabwe XI first innings is as follows:
