It took Ireland just four deliveries on the fourth morning to notch up an innings and 26 runs victory against United Arab Emirates in its first match of the ICC Intercontinental Cup at The Village in Malahide, Dublin on Friday (June 5).

Despite the start being delayed by half an hour due to rain, Ireland took all 20 points on offer after Craig Young dismissed Muhammed Naveed with just two runs added to UAE’s overnight total, bowling the side out for 253 in 100.4 overs after it had resumed on its overnight 251 for 9.

Young, the right-arm medium pacer, had 3 for 59 in the second innings and ended with a match haul of 7 for 110. George Dockrell, the left-arm spinner, meanwhile, was also among the wickets, with 7 for 141 in the match, including 4 for 93 in UAE’s second dig.

Earlier, Ed Joyce’s double century had batted UAE out of the game on the opening day. Ireland’s bowlers did well to dismiss UAE for 213 in its first innings, 279 runs behind its imposing total of 492. Enforcing the follow-on, Ireland had taken nine second-innings wickets by the close of play on the third day. As soon as play began on the fourth and final day, Ireland made the perfect start to its campaign.

Meanwhile, Khurram Khan, the former UAE captain who made 24 and 10 in his two innings, called time on his international career soon after the match.

Ireland joined Namibia at the top of the table in the ongoing first round of the Intercontinental Cup. The winner of the tournament will have an opportunity to become the 11th Test playing nation.

Ireland’s next assignment is the World Twenty20 qualifier, which starts on July 6 and will be co-hosted by Scotland.
