Bhutan remained isolated for years, self-refrained and unknown to the rest of the world. It is quite remarkable that Bhutan remained independent having been located between the Asian giants India and China. Archery being the national sport remained the most known and played sport in the country.
After television was introduced to the country in the 90s it popularised cricket, with the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1999 in England being showcased as the first major event for the population of Bhutan. Within no time enthusiastic cricket lovers stepped up in establishing an association and by 2001 the Bhutan Cricket Board were recognized by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and in 2003 became a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Bhutan participated in its first international tournament in Nepal in 2003 and in 2004 Bhutan bagged its first international win against Iran in the ACC Trophy held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, before finally losing to Nepal in the quarter-finals.
Having earned its first international win against Iran in 2004, Bhutan made remarkable reputation for themselves within a short span of tournaments. Having made a late entry to the sport Bhutan earned memorable wins against countries such as China, Brunei, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Maldives, and Myanmar.
Bhutan got through to world stage in 2010 when it competed in the ICC World Cricket League Division 8, winning two matches, in the group stages against Suriname and in the seventh-place play-off over The Bahamas.
Other notable achievements include Bhutan being a finalist at the ACC Under-15 and Under-19 Challenge Cups for the men’s team. The women team was no less in making its mark having played its first international tournament in 2008 and reaching the finals of Under-19 Singapore in 2010.
The Bhutan Cricket Council Board today has a head office in capital city Thimphu and four regional offices in the country. The cricket board looks after over 60 schools in the country whereby various tournaments for juniors are organised. Various club and district tournaments are also looked after by the cricket board.
