Donald

SASouth Africa

One of the most terrifying quick bowlers in the 1990s, Allan Donald was the spearhead of the South African attack for a decade. In Tests, he took 330 wickets at an average of 22.25, while in ODIs, he claimed 272 scalps at an average of 21.78.

Player Bio

One of the fiercest and fieriest fast bowlers, not just of his era but of all time, Allan Donald did as much as anyone to establish South Africa as a cricketing force to be reckoned with after isolation. Statistically, his record is spotless, with 602 international wickets at an average of 22. But evaluating him purely on numerical terms neglects the indelible impression he left when in full flight. In an age of great fast bowlers – Wasim, Waqar, Walsh, Ambrose to name but a few – he was one of the fastest, with new-ball partner Shaun Pollock providing the ice to Donald’s fire. The nickname ‘White Lightning’ suited him to perfection, and his 1998 Trent Bridge duel with Michael Atherton is rated as one of Test cricket’s most riveting passages of play.
