ADEL for Medical Professionals
Anti-Doping
Sports medical professionals play an important role in ensuring player health, safety, and performance. However, their role goes well beyond treating injuries and providing rehabilitation; it also involves navigating the complexities of anti-doping regulations and actively contributing to upholding cricket’s integrity.
Over the years, the role of sports medical professionals in anti-doping efforts has become more defined.
-
Education & Awareness: One of the key responsibilities is educating players about prohibited substances, the risks of doping, and the importance of clean sport. Sharing the consequences of doping with players and support staff as part of an early intervention strategy.
-
Monitoring & Reporting: Medical professionals must be vigilant in monitoring any signs of prohibited substance use, whether through behavioural changes or physical symptoms and consider their obligation to extend support to the player.
-
Compliance with Anti-Doping Regulations: Medical professionals are expected to have a strong understanding of anti-doping matters and support players in this complex area, especially when it comes to determining medication that is safe to use and processing Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) if required.
To ensure sports medical professionals provide teams with the support needed to operate effectively within the anti-doping framework, the ICC strongly recommends that they complete the ADEL course for medical professionals. It is a free course developed by WADA on their Anti-Doping Education and Learning (ADEL) platform and should take approximately one to two hours to complete the course.
