Bulldogs Bite in Fiji's league

The Western Bulldogs have bounced back in their second EPL match thanks to a five wicket haul from Iniasi Cakacaka and a strong batting partnership between the Sorovakatini brothers at the Central College ground in Lautoka.

The Suva Capitals seemed to suffer from the same first match batting jitters that haunted the Bulldogs in their first match last week. Sakaraia Lomani (2 for 18) did the initial damage, claiming the wickets of Fiji Under 19 representatives Seru Tupou and Inoke Cama in quick succession.

When Omid Saberi was run out shortly after the Capitals had crumbled to 4 for 17 and a rout was looking on the cards.

The collapse continued as off spinner Iniasi Cakacaka (5 for 33) continued to cut a swathe through the Capitals middle order before Sakove Vouvou and paceman Tukana Tavo stopped the rot, albeit temporarily.

Tavo smashed an unbeaten 34 which included 4 sixes and 2 fours before the Capitals were finally dismissed for a meagre 77.

With not much of a total to defend the Capitals bowlers got off to a flying start at Tavo (1 for 29) and Tasheed Tawheed (3 for 23) ripped through the top order to have the Bulldogs floundering at 4 for 8.

Also left floundering was Capitals keeper Omid Saberi, who disappeared off to Lautoka Hospital after dislocating his finger. Fortunately, he was well looked after by Bulldogs leg spinner, Dr. Rajeev Patel, who ensured Saberi received the best service available.

It wasn't until Blues skipper Joe Sorovakatini (25 not out) joined his brother Tavo (24) at the crease that a Bulldogs win looked probable as they steadied the ship and moved towards the required total.

When Tavo was dismissed by Greg Browne, Joe was joined by Blues middle order batsman Peni Rika who comfortably guided the Bullgods to their first win in the league.

Tukana Tavo was named Man of the Match for his brutal innings and good opening bowling stint.

The Capitals will now try to re-group during the week before taking on the Sigatoka Dunes next Saturday at the Army Barracks ground in Suva. The Dunes will still be flying after their dominant win over the Bulldogs in game 1 so the Capitals will have to be at their best to have any chance of staying in contention for the EPL title.
