CASE STUDY 6: Failing to cooperate with an investigation
What Happened?: In 2015, the ICC ACU commenced an investigation into allegations Jayananda Warnaweera may have engaged in conduct in breach of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. Warnaweera previously played international cricket for Sri Lanka, and at the time of the investigation was a Pitch Curator for SLC and a member of the SLC Interim Committee.
Although a number of attempts were made to meet with Warnaweera and interview him, he failed to attend scheduled interviews or respond to communication from the ICC ACU, and he also failed to provide requested information demanded under provision of the Code.
Consequences: The ICC issued disciplinary proceedings on Warnaweera on the basis that he had failed or refused to cooperate with the ACU investigation. Warnaweera continued to fail to comply with the disciplinary proceedings and was in his absence was banned by the ICC for 3 years from any involvement with cricket.
