Cricket PNG promotes HIV/Aids Awareness to Lae's best junior cricketers.
Last week the best U19 Cricketers from across the Morobe region gathered together in Lae for a 5 day Elite Performance/Talent ID Camp that included sessions on HIV/Aids awareness and a goodwill visit to a local hospital to visit children living with HIV.
As part of Cricket PNG's nationwide Elite Performance/Talent ID Camp's for U19's, the Lae Camp saw 33 cricketers engage in a series of Elite Fitness and Cricket training sessions focused on unearthing talent good enough to trial for the Papua New Guinea U19 Side the Garramuts who will shortly begin their fight for ICC U19 Cricket World Cup qualification.
Regional Cricket Manager for Morobe, Mr Rodney Maha was thrilled with the skills and commitment that were on show.
"It is always pleasing to see the youth of our country demonstrating the values of hard work and focus and the boys who we took into camp over the last few days were perfect examples. We have certainly identified a number of guy's who will challenge for positions in our U19 Side," he said.
As part of the Camp, Mr Maha also arranged for the players to be visited by members of the Lae Health community engaged in the fight against HIV/Aids, including Sister Theodora from the Unitech Clinic who educated the boys about the illness.
It met with unanimous approval when the boys were subsequently asked if they would like to visit the local hospital to spread some cheer to those poor youngsters who are living with HIV.
"After four days of hard cricket and fitness work I was so impressed by the enthusiasm with which the players visited the sick in Hospital. At our end of camp when I asked the boys what they had learnt and what they had enjoyed the most; they all spoke of their visit to the Hospital and what they had learnt from Sister Theodora".
Cricket PNG plans on including HIV and AIDS awareness as key social message across all of its operations.
"The International Cricket Council has teamed up with UNAIDS in the Think Wise Campaign using International Superstars like Ramnaresh Sarwan and Nathan Bracken as Ambassadors and we are proud to be working at the grassroots level promoting this important social message," said Cricket PNG CEO Bill Leane.
