England lose spinner to concussion as New Zealand skipper looks towards ODIs

Mixed news on the injury front for England and New Zealand as attention starts to turn towards the ODI component of their series.

England spinner Sophie Glenn will miss the next three matches of her side's tour of New Zealand as she continues her recovery from concussion.

Glenn hurt herself when diving for a catch during the third game of England's T20I series against the Kiwis in Nelson and sat out the ensuing contest when her side opened up an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series.

The world's No.2 ranked T20I bowler will now miss the fifth and final game of England's T20I series against New Zealand and the opening two matches of the ODI component of the series as she continues her recovery.

England released a statement confirming the news, with Glenn some chance of returning to the field for the final ODI match of the tour in Hamilton on April 7.

"She will now follow the ECB Graded Return to Play Protocols and will miss at least the fourth (27 March) and fifth (29 March) IT20 matches as well as the first two ODIs (1 April and 4 April)," an ECB statement said.

"No replacement has been called up to the squad at this point."

Sarah Glenn had a day to remember, taking 3/19 in England's ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2023 match against Ireland.

The news is somewhat better for Sophie Devine, after the experience New Zealand skipper hurt her quad during the fourth-match of the series in Wellington.

Devine was restricted to just one over with the ball and failed to bat during New Zealand's innings, but the 34-year-old believes the quad strain she picked up is just minor and is hoping to return during the ODIs.

"Probably just a small niggle," Devine indicated.

"Just looking ahead with the one-dayers being really important with WC (ICC Women's Championship) points. I probably wanted to get back out there but someone with a bit more of a rational brain kept me off."

New Zealand later released a statement of their own that indicated Devine would miss the final match of the T20I series in a hope of taking part in the ODIs that follow.

“We’re obviously disappointed for Sophie, but the focus is now to make her available for as much of the ODI series as possible," New Zealand coach Ben Sawyer said.

“Sophie will be monitored over the next few days and that will give us a better idea of what her availability is before the first game on Monday.

“The ODI series is an important series for us with ICC ODI Championship points on the line so we’re hopeful that Sophie will make a quick recovery.”

Young batter Georgia Plimmer  has been called into New Zealand's squad as cover for Devine.
