'I wasn't able to give my best' – Jhulan Goswami explains T20I retirement

Goswami, 35, called it quits from the format on Thursday, 23 August, just two months before the ICC Women’s World T20 2018 in the West Indies in November.

“It's not an overnight decision. I have been thinking about this for sometime,” she told news agencies.

“I couldn't motivate myself to play T20Is … The game has become faster. I wasn't able to give my best in both the formats ... I felt I was getting older and I didn't have much more to give.

“Cricket has become tougher, and I have realised my body is taking time to recover," she added. “Injury is part and parcel of every sportsperson's life. You have to cope with it. But there was no pressure from anyone. It's my personal decision.”

Goswami, who finishes with 56 wickets from 68 T20Is, the most by any Indian, insisted she had no regrets about missing the Women's World T20. Her focus was now on one-day internationals, she said, where she is the all-time leading wicket-taker with 203 wickets from 169 matches.

In her absence, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian side will turn to Shikha Pandey to lead the pace attack in the shortest format, with youngsters Mansi Joshi and Pooja Vastrakar offering support. The uncapped Arundhati Reddy has also been named in the squad for the T20Is against Sri Lanka, and Goswami backed them to do well.

"I've seen the squad that has been announced for the T20Is versus Sri Lanka. There's lot of talent and I'm sure someone will make most of the opportunity," she said.

"The team has some very good players. I can't talk about whether they will find my replacement or not but I am sure with the kind of talent we have, we will keep doing well as a unit."

Following a tour of Sri Lanka and matches against the Windies, India will begin their World T20 campaign on 9 November against New Zealand.
