India trio close in on top ranking as England stars make gains

A trio of in-form stars from India have closed in on the premier position at the top of the ICC Men's ODI Batter Rankings.

New Zealander Daryl Mitchell holds on to a narrow lead as the No.1 ranked batter in 50-over cricket, but Shubman Gill (second), Virat Kohli (third) and Rohit Sharma (fourth) have all made ground following some big efforts for India during their recent ODI series against England.

Gill managed 188 runs across the three matches to close within one rating point of Mitchell (802 Rating Points) at the top, while Kohli (767 Points) and Rohit (758 Points) are also within striking distance following some decent efforts across the recent three-game series that England won 2-1.

It was veteran Joe Root that proved the difference between the two sides with 249 runs without being dismissed and the right-hander was rewarded as he rose four places to move to eighth on the same rankings list for ODI batters.

England teammates Ben Duckett (up 11 spots to equal 19th) and Jacob Bethell (up five rungs to 64th) also made ground on the list for ODI batters, while New Zealand duo Michael Bracewell (up six slots to 54th) and Mark Chapman (up 10 places to 62nd) were other major beneficiaries on this rankings category following some good efforts with the bat against the West Indies.

Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan remains at the top of the rankings for ODI bowlers, with England pace spearhead Jofra Archer among the big movers this week as he gains one place to move to third and right on the heels of second-placed Abrar Ahmed following his five wickets across the series against India.

West Indies spinner Gudakesh Motie (up seven places to equal ninth) is another big mover inside the top 10, while teammate Alzarri Joseph (up 10 slots to 26th), Bracewell (up 14 spots to 29th) and India spinner Axar Patel (up 10 rungs to equal 32nd) are among the other players to make ground.

Bracewell also makes eye-catching progress on the latest rankings for ODI all-rounders, with the experienced 35-year-old improving two places to a new career-high rating in third place behind Afghanistan's Azmatullah Omarzai and Bangladesh's Mehidy Hazan Miraz.

There is also some change on the updated T20I rankings following the completion of the three-game series between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, with players from both sides making inroads in the shortest format.

Zimbabwe right-hander Brian Bennett achieves a new career-high rating by gaining two places to move to ninth for T20I batters, while Bangladesh duo Tanzid Hasan (up seven slots to 20th) and Saif Hassan (up nine spots to 27th) also make ground.

There was more joy for Bangladesh following their series triumph as Mahedi Hasan (up four rungs to 19th) and Rishad Hossain (up eight slots to equal 25th) improved up the rankings for T20I bowlers, while Zimbabwe will be buoyed by the gains made by Richard Ngarava (up 37 places to 32nd).
