Sialkot enjoy consolation win
Sialkot Stallions beat Hampshire in their Champions League Qualifying Pool 1 match in Johannesburg as both sides bowed out of the competition on Thursday.
Auckland Aces had previously defeated both to secure their place in the main tournament, reducing this final qualifying fixture to a dead rubber.
Glen Maxwell was chiefly responsible for Hampshire posting 143-8, thrashing 42 off 29 balls including four fours and three sixes. Experienced duo Shoaib Malik (1-15 from 3 overs) and Naved-ul-Hasan (1-23 from 4 overs) led from the front with the ball for the Stallions. Sialkot's reply began poorly as they slipped to 28-3 by the end of the seventh over. Haris Sohail (63 not out off 57 balls) and Shoaib (39 off 25 balls) then added 96 for the fourth wicket to bring the game back in their favour. The Stallions duly completed their task with five balls to spare.
The first match of the day between Trinidad and Tobago and Uva Next was rained off with just a single delivery of the Sri Lankan champions' reply possible.
T and T had earlier posted a formidable 181-3 on the back of contrasting innings. William Perkins made 32 out of a first-wicket stand of 33, hitting four fours and two sixes in his blistering 15-ball innings. Fellow opener Lendl Simmons then picked up his pace after a slow beginning to hit 34 off 30 balls (three fours and two sixes). Darren Bravo (54 not out off 42 balls) and Denesh Ramdin (50 off 31 balls) put on an unbeaten 95 for the fourth wicket in 62 balls to make the Caribbean side favourites at the midway stage. T and T's prospects were boosted still further when Dilshan Munaweera fell to the first ball of Uva Next's innings. But with the rain already falling the umpires halted proceedings immediately after the opener's dismissal with play called off an hour later.
Both teams were already guaranteed an early exit after Yorkshire beat them in previous Qualifying Pool 2 matches.
