South Africa’s historic tour continues with first-ever ODI triumph over Australia

South Africa women won the second game in North Sydney by 84 runs (DLS method) to secure their first-ever ODI win against Australia and tie the three-match series 1-1.

After registering their first-ever win over Australia in the second T20I in Canberra earlier in the tour, South Africa have now recorded their maiden women's ODI victory against the side from Down Under. The win also took South Africa to the top of the ICC Women's Championship Standings.

This was South Africa’s first win over Australia in the 50-over format in 17 matches, having lost 15 previously and tied one.

Marizanne Kapp, who starred for South Africa in the comprehensive win in the second ODI, said the victory was a historic day for her team.

"It's a proud moment," Kapp said.

"Not only for me but for South African cricket as a whole.

"We all know we've never beaten Australia in a one-day game. So, to be able to perform and help my team over the line is a massive achievement for me."

The ace all-rounder had also top-scored for the Proteas in the first ODI in Adelaide, but was forced to retire hurt for 50*. She didn’t take the field in the game thereafter, as South Africa lost by eight wickets.

However, Kapp made a remarkable comeback in North Sydney, smashing 12 fours during her 87-ball 75, helping the visitors to 229/6 in 45 overs. Anneke Bosch (44) and Chloe Tryon (37) were the other major contributors with the bat.

Kapp then ran through the Australia top order, getting rid of Alyssa Healy, Phoebe Litchfield, and Beth Mooney in a space of 13 balls. The hosts never recovered from these blows and folded for 149.

For her brilliant fifty and figures of 3/12, Kapp was the Player of the Match.

With the series tied at 1-1, the third ODI on 10 February in North Sydney will be the decider.
