Seven wins from eight outings, the latest of which was in a semi-final thriller against England, have propelled India to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Final.
The defending champions stand one win away from becoming only the first team to secure back-to-back Men’s T20 World Cup titles. If they are able to clinch the summit clash in Ahmedabad, India will also become the first-ever team to win the tournament on home soil.
We take a look back at how the two-time winners made their way into the title decider.
India defeated USA by 29 runs
The co-hosts were dealt an early scare in the tournament in Mumbai. The USA bowlers, led by Shadley van Schalkwyk, ran through the Indian batting order, leaving them reeling at 77/6.
It was from here that skipper Suryakumar Yadav turned the tide, scoring a mighty impressive 84 off 49 deliveries to shoulder the innings to 161/9. The innings, composed of 10 fours and 4 sixes proved vital as the Indian bowlers saw through the task of their first defence.
Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the bowlers, nabbing three wickets while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel snapped a brace each.

An authoritative batting display came into play for the co-hosts in their second outing. Ishan Kishan (61 from 24) and Hardik Pandya (52 from 28) notched quickfire half-centuries as India posted 209/9 in Delhi.
The duo shared nine maximums between each other in what was a taste of India’s batting prowess.
While Namibia did get off to a promising start - 86/2 off 9.1 overs - the bowling attack upped the ante to quickly change the complexion of the game. Varun Chakaravarthy guided the charge, registering a three-wicket haul as Namibia bundled out for 116.

India defeated Pakistan by 61 runs
The latest chapter in a fabled rivalry saw India breeze past Pakistan. The foundation of the win was laid by Ishan Kishan, who scored his second half-century on the trot.
Lacing 10 fours and three sixes in his innings of 77, the left-handed batter displayed an array of strokes to help India set 175/7 on the board.
It was followed by yet another clinical bowling display. The all-round performance saw Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakaravarthy nab a brace. Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav and Tilak Varma notched a wicket each.

Shivam Dube came to the fore for India, carving out a brilliant 66 off 31 deliveries. The knock contained a total of four boundaries and six maximums. He was duly complemented by handy cameos from Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya.
The contributions helped India post 193 on the board. The Netherlands also came out all guns blazing with the bat.
Bas de Leede (33), Zach Lion-Cachet (26) and Noah Croes (25*) put up a valiant show but the Dutch eventually fell short by 17 runs. While Shivam Dube added onto his all-round performance with a couple wickets, Varun Chakaravarthy (3/14) was once again the standout performer with the ball for India.

South Africa defeated India by 76 runs
The defending champions were dealt their first loss of the tournament at the hands of South Africa in their first Super 8 fixture.
Also arriving into the contest on the back of an unbeaten run, the Proteas recovered from an early string of wickets while batting first in Ahmedabad. Dewald Brevis (45) and David Miller (63) stitched the comeback with a 97-run stand for the fourth wicket. Tristan Stubbs then, delivered the finishing blows with the bat, compiling 44 runs off 24 deliveries.
In response, India were put under the pump by the South Africa bowlers from the get-go. Marco Jansen (4/22) and Keshav Maharaj (3/24) shared seven wickets between each other as India bundled out for 111, leaving a massive net run rate dent in their account.

India defeated Zimbabwe by 72 runs
In what was a must-win contest, India put their best foot forward with the bat. Abhishek Sharma (55) and Sanju Samson (24) made early inroads, adding 48 for the opening wicket off just 22 deliveries.
Under the scanner for his low returns with the bat, Abhishek finally went past the 50-run mark for the first time in the tournament. India kept their foot on the pedal with another quickfire half-century from Hardik Pandya, that saw them past the 250-run mark to score the second-highest total in tournament history - 256/4.
Zimbabwe put in a resilient effort in their chase, which was headlined by opener Brian Bennett, who notched an unbeaten 97. However, a lack of strong partnerships meant India prevailed with a hefty margin. Arshdeep Singh nabbed three wickets, most in the game for India.

The stakes were high with the winner of the contest getting the final remaining ticket for the T20 World Cup semi-final.
Batting first, the West Indies powered through to 195/4. Chasing at the Eden Gardens, India lost two wickets in the powerplay.
Sanju Samson (97* from 50 balls) then shouldered the chase for the co-hosts, notching his maiden half-century at the tournament. In what was near-flawless innings, Samson kept the scoreboard ticking, piercing 12 fours and four sixes.
It was his knock of for the ages that guided India past the line, sealing their spot in the final four as West Indies’ campaign came to an end.

For a third successive Men’s T20 World Cup, India faced England in the semi-final. The setting was the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Having been put in to bat first, India made the most of the conditions on play. Sanju Samson was once again at the centre of their batting efforts. A second half-century in a row (89), put the co-hosts in a promising position.
Shivam Dube also came in handy with a knock of 43 while late blitz from Hardik Pandya (27) and Tilak Varma (21) helped India to a record-highest total, 253/7, at an ICC T20 World Cup knockout fixture.
England however, didn’t halt at the challenge. Despite the early wickets, Jacob Bethell (105 off 48) put on a magnificent performance, scoring his maiden T20I ton.
However, clutch bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, backed by two stunning fielding moments from Axar Patel, helped India inch past the finish line.
