Sri Lanka and New Zealand are both battling for survival as they clash in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eights at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday.

New Zealand's match against Pakistan was rained out and the teams ended up splitting points. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka lost to England on Sunday and will be desperate to open their account.

Having won their first two matches in the Super Eight stage, England are already through to the semi-final. That means Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Pakistan are jostling for the remaining semis slot in Group 2.

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to field first against a New Zealand side that may be a little rusty, playing their first match in nine days since their Super Eight clash against Pakistan was washed out.

Though Finn Allen was quick out of the blocks, Sri Lanka struck back in the third over, with Maheesh Theekshana packing off the right-hander. New Zealand didn't quite get the acceleration they wanted up front, ending powerplay on 44/2.

A 41-run partnership between Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips provided the much needed respite.

But Phillips' dismissal triggered a middle-order collapse, with New Zealand losing four wickets for nine runs, including three in the space of eight balls and zero runs. Off spinner Theekshana (3/9) and pacer Dushmantha Chameera (2/8) have been exceptional, holding New Zealand to 90/6 in 15 overs.
