Scotland begin tri-series with dominant win
Hosts Scotland opened their Women's T20 World Cup preparations with a commanding win over Netherlands in Edinburgh.
With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup just around the corner, Scotland delivered an impressive all-round performance to defeat Netherlands in the opening match of the tri-series in Edinburgh.
Netherlands, set to make their maiden appearance at the Women’s T20 World Cup next month, won the toss and elected to bat first against Scotland, who are preparing for their second appearance at the global event.
Heather Siegers came out with aggressive intent, striking four boundaries in the opening over bowled by Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce. The early momentum, however, was interrupted when Kirstie Gordon dismissed Phebe Molkenboer in the third over.
Dutch skipper Babette de Leede joined Siegers as the pair counter-attacked with a flurry of boundaries before Bryce struck back on the very first ball of the fifth over to remove Siegers and leave Netherlands at 47 for 2.
Scotland continued to tighten their grip on the innings. Over the next 31 deliveries, Netherlands managed only 31 runs while losing three more wickets as the hosts applied consistent pressure through disciplined bowling.
A vital recovery came through a 53-run stand between Frederique Overdijk and Robine Rijke. Rijke led the charge with a composed 46 from 44 balls, including five boundaries, while Overdijk added 22 with three fours.
Katherine Fraser eventually broke the partnership at the end of the 18th over when Overdijk departed. Netherlands struggled to accelerate in the closing overs as Scotland finished strongly. A brilliant running catch from Abtaha Maqsood removed Rijke in the penultimate over, while Gordon returned in the final over to pick up another wicket and finish with impressive figures of 3 for 27.
Fraser was equally economical, returning 1 for 19 from her four overs with 13 dot balls at an economy of 4.75.
Chasing 142, Scotland got off to a flying start through Darcey Carter and Katherine Fraser. Carter showcased her intent early with a lofted shot and a pull for boundaries in the opening over.
The momentum shifted heavily in Scotland’s favour during the fifth over bowled by Isabel van der Woning. After five wides in succession, Fraser capitalised by smashing three consecutive boundaries as Scotland raced to 59 without loss after five overs.
The opening pair continued to dominate, taking Scotland to 94 without loss at the halfway mark. Carter brought up her eighth T20I half-century in just 33 balls, striking seven fours and a six.
Their century partnership arrived in the 11th over before Carter eventually departed for 55 from 37 deliveries, giving Netherlands a much-needed breakthrough.
By then, Scotland firmly controlled the chase. Fraser carried on confidently alongside skipper Bryce and completed her half-century in 39 balls. Bryce eventually struck the winning runs as Scotland sealed victory comfortably with 31 balls remaining.

Fraser’s outstanding all-round contribution of 56 not out from 41 balls, featuring 10 boundaries, along with her economical spell, earned her the Player of the Match award.
Scotland next face Bangladesh on May 30, while Netherlands will take on the Asian side a day later as all three teams continue their preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
