Denis Compton was born on May 23, 1918, in Hendon, Middlesex. The right-hand batsman who occasionally bowled left-arm wrist spin, scored 5,807 runs in 78 Tests at 50.06 including 17 centuries. He also picked up 25 wickets including one five-wicket haul.

Stamping his authoritative ascendancy on bowlers, Compton’s popularity in the post-war era was unmatched. Apart from audacious batting against the best, he also played professional football for Arsenal FC and was the part of the FA Cup winning side in 1950.
