PNG finish undefeated after washout
The Papua New Guinea Garamuts have finished with a perfect win record at the 2018 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup – East Asia-Pacific Qualifier 2017 in Samoa after their final match against Vanuatu was washed out without a ball bowled.
Unseasonal rain in Apia forced the abandonment of the match on the reserve day after two days of wet weather.
The washout means PNG finish with five wins from five matches and have qualified for the 2018 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand.
All three other teams finished with two wins each meaning final placings came down to net run rate.
Vanuatu just pipped Fiji for second position who finished a disappointing third after they won the previous qualifier in 2015.
Samoa ended the competition in fourth place but would have been delighted to have two wins on the board, their first ever at international under 19 level.
At the closing ceremony in Apia, PNG opener Igo Mahuru picked up the batting award for most runs while Fiji’s opening bowler Jack Charters was named both Player of the Tournament and best bowler for his 15 wickets.
