Netherlands trounces Canada by nine wickets

Van der Gugten and Seelar bowl Canada out for just 67; Netherlands cross target in 10.4 overs

Timm van der Gugten picked up his career-best figures of 5 for 24 to help Netherlands register a thrashing nine-wicket win over Canada in their World Cricket League match at Maple Leaf North-West Ground in King City on Thursday (August 29).

Put in to bat, Canada had a less-than ideal start and lost its first six wickets within seven overs with only ten runs on the board. Only Damodar Daesrath and Junaid Siddiqui had double-digit scores, four batsmen were dismissed for ducks.

Even though Daesrath and Siddiqui tried to rebuild the innings with a 34-run partnership, the Netherlands bowlers proved too good for them as Gugten and Pieter Seelaar picked up wickets at will, sharing nine between them. The collapse started early as Gugten dismissed both Hiral Patel and Nitish Kumar in the first over of the innings.

With a small target of 68 to chase down, Netherlands had a decent start but lost Michael Swart in the fifth over when Jeremy Gordon dismissed him caught behind by Ashish Bagai. But Stephen Myburgh and Wesely Barresi made sure no further damage was done as they reached the target in the eleventh over. Myburgh finished with 52, his third ODI half-century.

Van der Gugten was given the Man of the Match award for his destructive bowling.

Brief Scores: Canada 67 in 24.4 overs (Damodar Daesrath 31; T van der Gugten 5-24, Pieter Seelaar 4-15) lost to Netherlands 70/1 in 10.4 overs (Stephen Myburgh 52*, Jeremy Gordon 1-25) by nine wickets.
