Suresh Raina, who has been integral to India’s limited-overs plans for a long time now, was left out of a 15-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup that will start in Bangladesh later this month.
The selectors named squads for the Asia Cup as well as the World Twenty20, also to be held in Bangladesh – in March-April – on Tuesday (February 11), with Raina’s the most prominent name missing. There was also no room for Ishant Sharma in either squad.
Raina, a 189-game One-Day International veteran with a batting average of 35.35 and a healthy strike-rate of 91.35, has been off the boil in recent times, averaging just 26.4 in 30 games in the last 12 months. He did, however, hold on to his place in the squad for the World T20.
Cheteshwar Pujara, who played two ODIs against Zimbabwe in August 2013, earned a recall to the ODI squad for the Asia Cup. He had scored 13 and 0 while opening the innings then, and has a List A average of 54.57.
In the 15-man squad for the World T20, there were a number of changes from the team that faced Australia in the one-off T20I in Rajkot in October 2013. The axe fell on Ambati Rayudu, Ishant, Jaydev Unadkat and R Vinay Kumar, while Ajinkya Rahane, Stuart Binny, Mohit Sharma and Varun Aaron, on a comeback trail following injury, were drafted in.
