Australia retains Trans-Tasman trophy

Australia registered a comfortable 149-run victory over New Zealand at Gabba after Mitchell Johnson picked up his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket by cleaning up the Kiwis tail.

Chasing an improbable 327 for victory, the Black Caps resumed the day four on 6 for 143 but lost their remaining four wickets with the addition of 34 runs to be all out for 177 inside the opening hour of the morning session.

Ross Taylor top scored for the Black Caps with 75 runs before Johnson took his wicket. Johnson also, dismissed Jesse Ryder, Daniel Flynn, Daniel Vettori (10) and Chris Martin (1) to complete his 5-wicket haul. Johnson finished with 5-39 off 17.3 overs and was also impressive in the first innings, taking 4- 30.

The left-armer was backed up by Stuart Clark, who claimed four for 43 as they broke down the Black Caps' resistance.

Simon Katich scored the only century of the match to leave New Zealand with a difficult task of winning the Test.

The Man of the Match award was pocketed by Mitchell Johnson. With this win Australia will retain the Trans-Tasman cricket trophy and the result of the second Test, starting on Friday in Adelaide will not matter.
