Benn five-for guides West Indies to big win

Sulieman Benn, the left-arm spinner, starred with a five-wicket haul as West Indies beat Bangladesh by 296 runs at the Beausejour Stadium in Gros Islet on Tuesday (September 16) and took the two-match series 2-0. Benn's figures of 5 for 72 off 32 overs helped the host bowl Bangladesh out for 192 after Shivnarine Chanderpaul's 30th Test century helped West Indies declare its second innings at 269 for 4 and set the visitor an unlikely 489 for a series-levelling win.

West Indies added quick runs in the morning when it resumed at 208 for 4, Chanderpaul and Jermaine Blackwood putting on 61 in just ten overs and extending their unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership to 169.

Chanderpaul, overnight 63, remained unbeaten on 101, his 30th Test hundred, while Blackwood was not out on 66 when the declaration was effected.

Bangladesh made a positive start, Tamim Iqbal and Shamsur Rahman putting on 47 for the opening wicket in 8.4 overs. Jerome Taylor broke through when he had Rahman caught by Kirk Edwards for a 27-ball 39 that included four boundaries and two sixes.

Bangladesh suffered another setback when Anamul Haque departed soon after, an outside edge off Benn falling into the hands of Denesh Ramsin, the captain and wicketkeeper.

Mominul Haque then joined Tamim and the duo added 110 for the third wicket to lead Bangladesh's recovery.

But once Tamim departed in the 59th over, caught off Benn, Bangladesh suffered a collapse and lost eight wickets for just 34 runs. Tamim top-scored with 64, while Mominul played a patient knock of 56 off 139 balls.

Benn was supported well by Taylor, who finished with 3 for 39 off 13 overs and completed 100 Test wickets in the process, while Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel took a wicket apiece.
