Buttler gets vice-captaincy as England confirm XI for first Test
The hosts have also named Adil Rashid and Sam Curran in their team for the side's momentous 1,000th Test.
England captain Joe Root confirmed that Buttler will be given the responsibility of being his right-hand man during the five-match series, a role he has undertaken in the ODI side.
It represents a massive turnaround in fortunes in Test cricket for the Lancashire man, who was recalled in May for the series versus Pakistan after an 18-month exile from the five-day format, owed largely to some strong performances in the 2018 Indian Premier League.
A shock inclusion at the time by England's new chief national selector, Ed Smith, Buttler repaid the faith by hitting two half-centuries during the series.
Rashid, meanwhile, has been the subject of much debate in the last week after he announced his return to availability for Test cricket, despite signing a white-ball-only contract with Yorkshire for this season.
Surrey's Sam Curran maintains his place in the side as the fourth seamer, most recently taking two wickets in the victorious second Test against Pakistan in June.
Off-spinner Moeen Ali and Essex quick Jamie Porter are the two members of the 13-man squad who aren't included in the team.
