Pakistan-born leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed has been granted a permanent visa by Australian Immigration Minister Chris Bowen, subject to undertaking the normal health and security checks.

The 33-year-old played 10 first-class matches in his Pakistani homeland between 2005-2009 but has more recently made a contribution to Victorian cricket as a player for Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club and Melbourne University Cricket Club.

The slow bowler assisted the Australian team as a net bowler during the recent first Test against South Africa in Brisbane and is now targeting playing in state cricket.

Fawad said: "I'm grateful to the government and everyone who helped me with my application. It is overwhelming, I'm really happy."

Cricket Australia CEO, James Sutherland added: "The Australian cricket community has really come together in support of Fawad, and we are just so thrilled with the news.

"Cricket Australia would like to thank the Immigration Minister for his personal consideration of Fawad's case, and for his decision to grant Fawad a permanent visa.

"This is proof that through cricket, we can help achieve life-changing outcomes for people."

Australia Test opener Ed Cowan has supported Fawad during the application process.

He said: "We often see considerable negativity surrounding asylum seekers, so it's incredibly pleasing that an educated, skilful and compassionate young man like Fawad has been given the chance to make a life for himself in Australia.

"We have all been touched by his story and immensely proud of how far he has come."
