Independence Weekend Action in Madang
Cricket made a successful return to Madang in PNG with the staging of the first 3 rounds of the inaugural 'Dulux Cup' over Independence weekend (16-18th of September, 2011).
The event was organized by Cricket PNG staff: Community Cricket Development Officer, Ben Ryan and Madang Regional Cricket Manager, Bobby Alau. Dulux has provided sponsorship in 9 provinces in PNG to support the staging of these cricket tournaments in 2011.
The tournament attracted 10 Men's teams and 8 Women's teams and in excess of 164 players. Many interested onlookers stopped to watch the action as they enjoyed the 36th anniversary Independence celebrations in Madang. Each team played 3 round robin games over the weekend and will play off one more time in the finals on the 24th of September to decide the final placings.
The rules of the tournament were modified 12 over games with 8 players per team and designed to maximise participation and enjoyment by all players.
The men's tournament competed at Yabong Oval, Madang and featured some big hitting and exciting finishes.
The Women's tournament played their games at Bates Oval, Madang and there was some amazing athleticism and skills on display.
The tournament is also supported by Save the Children who had stalls at both venues.
Friends, family, supporters and Madang residents are urged to attend the venues and witness this community event and cheer along the participants.
