Loubser excited by captaincy role
Sunette Loubser has revealed her excitement at being named South African captain for the ICC Women’s World Cup and believes her side have a chance of doing well in the event.
“I think we have a great chance of doing well. We have put in lots of hard work and we are looking forward to the matches starting,” said Loubser.
“It is most people’s dream to travel and to have the chance to represent your country is amazing. I can’t wait to compete against the very best players in the world.”
Loubser, who replaces former skipper Cri-Zelda Brits, says that there will be no problems between the two players and revealed that the previous captain had already offered her support.
“I have great respect for Cri-Zelda as a player and as a captain, but when I was asked to be captain I was not going to say no as it is such a huge honour,” she said.
“She understands the reasons for the change, there are no hard feelings, and she has said that she will be there to support me if I need anything as that is the kind of person that she is.”
Loubser admitted that her side had targeted the opening game against West Indies as a crucial match if it is to make it through to the Super Six stage of the ICC Women’s World Cup.
“We have a number of goals in the tournament and the Super Six is one that is not negotiable,” she said.
“The first game for us is the most important one and that will be the main focus for us, but we will be backing ourselves in all of the matches.”
