Rain prevents play between South Africa and India

With mist shrouding Table Mountain and persistent drizzle from the early hours of the morning, no play was possible on the third day of the first Test between South Africa and India at Newlands in Cape Town.

South Africa had finished the second day on 65 for 2 in their second innings, a lead of 142, and despite the ground staff working through the afternoon with the Super Sopper to try and get the outfield ready, another shower ended any hope of play in the final session.

Hardik Pandya had starred on day two, hitting 93 to boost India's first-innings total to 209 alongside Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who supported well with 25 from 86 balls. Pandya then showed his potential with the ball in hand, dismissing both of the hosts openers, having Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar caught late on.

Although rain prevented any play on day three between the top two ranked Test sides, prospects of play on Monday are better, with no rain forecast in Cape Town.

Nightwatchman Kagiso Rabada and Hashim Amla will resume tomorrow at 10:30 local time, with 98 overs scheduled to be bowled in the day.
