Born on 17 December, 1881, Aubrey Faulkner was one of South Africa’s earliest cricket heroes, representing the nation 25 times across an 18-year career that featured 118 first-class appearances.

Among the greatest all-rounders in the early 20th century, Faulkner was an unconventional but hugely effective batter and one the first leg-spinners to master the art of the googly.

Faulkner notched four centuries and four five-wicket hauls in his international career. He became just the second player to claim a five-for and score a ton in the same Test in 1910 against England at Johannesburg.

He made history later that year by becoming the first South African to score a Test double-century, making a career-best 204 against Australia at the MCG.

With the ball – the craft with which he first broke into professional cricket - his best effort was a famous haul of 7/84 against England at the Oval in 1912.
