ICC Global Leaders Academy focuses on empowering future leaders

The Exexcutive XI at ICC Headquarters

The inaugural ICC Global Leaders Academy has been launched, bringing together 28 of cricket’s current and future world leaders on an innovative development programme.

The two-tiered program consists of eight senior level executives in the ‘The Executive XI’ and 20 future leaders in the 'Trailblazers' following 18 and six month respective programmes. In all, 22 member nations were represented across the five days at the ICC Headquarters.

The revolutionary programme is designed to improve and change how cricket can be led in the future by looking out beyond the sporting landscape. The focus is to empower future leaders to have the courage to think big, be culturally aware and politically savvy.

Both groups visited the ICC Headquarters in Dubai and spent time with the Head Coach (Chief Executive) of Red Bull Middle East / Africa, Nicolas Hamawi as well as senior leaders from Ski Dubai and Vox cinemas.

Cricket Scotland’s Chief Executive, Malcolm Cannon – Executive XI participant- explains the importance of learning from other brands.

“It was imperative to recognise that full immersion into a brand is very important. The engagement of everyone to ‘sell’ a concept and have a shared sense of direction makes the job of leadership simpler and more rewarding. All underpinned by being creative, but also being prepared to fail and press the reset button.

“Quite simply, this was a game-changing experience. Not only through self-analysis, but also developing a support network which appreciates the pressures and being exposed to experiences, advice and expertise from senior leaders,” concluded Cannon.

Following each three-day leadership workshop bursting with immersive experiences, the real work starts now as the next step of the Academy begins. This includes external coaching, peer-to-peer networks and support from the participants’ leaders. Each individual will be experimenting and applying their learnings during ‘sprint’ projects.

Ulrika Lingslunde, Chief Executive of the Swedish Cricket Federation - a ‘Trailblazer’ - is grateful for the bespoke programme led by the ICC.

“We´ve had three intense days together pushing us to our limits and challenging our assumptions as leaders. Thank you to the ICC for making this investment in the ICC Global Leaders Academy, now it´s time to return to Sweden and start the next phase of development for me and for Swedish Cricket,” said Lingslunde.

Chief Executive Officer of the United Arab Emirates Cricket Board, David East pinpointed specific skills to improve moving forward: “The implementation of new tools and techniques to help develop me as a decisive leader was the most important take-away.”

The programme has been led by the ICC’s Development Services Manager, Andy Hobbs who is excited by the initial outcomes of the Academy.

“The ICC Global Leaders Academy is a significant investment in the leaders and future leaders of the developing cricket world. We firmly believe for us to improve the quality of international cricket, build better cricket systems, get more people playing cricket and grow the game, we need high quality, savvy and determined leaders.

“We established a programme of what the game demands of its future leaders, one of the key priorities is to be ‘comfortable being uncomfortable’ and the way the participants embraced that challenge throughout the week was remarkable and inspiring. The truly exciting part is that this was just the start of the journey for all 28 leaders,” said Hobbs.
