Sune Luus will captain South Africa in their limited-overs series against Pakistan, Cricket South Africa announced as they named the squad on Friday, 26 April.
Luus will stand in as Dane van Niekerk, the regular captain, continues her recovery from a stress fracture of the right femur. Ayabonga Khaka, the pacer, also missed out through injury as she continues her rehabilitation after a shoulder surgery.
There was a call-up for Nondumiso Shangase, the 23-year-old all-rounder, who is in line to make her debut during the series. She is a product of the Women’s National Academy, and was part of the emerging team that hosted England and Australia last year.
There were also returns for Chloe Tryon, the vice-captain, who has recovered completely from a groin injury. Opener Lizelle Lee is also fully fit and has been recalled, while Sinalo Jafta, the 24-year-old, who played the last of her five ODIs in 2017, came back for both the ICC Women's Championship ODIs and the T20Is.
“We are excited with the squad of players selected for the upcoming series, and have considered options for both ODI and T20 squads, with the latter being a focus for the T20 World Cup preparation,” said Clinton du Preez. “We once again miss some key players, but there is a great opportunity for players to stake their claim for more consistent positions in the team.
“The return of Sinalo Jafta and a potential new cap Nondumiso Shangase gives us an opportunity to look at our depth and options in various positions while having senior players returning also bolsters the team.”
South Africa will look to secure another six points in the ODIs and move up on the IWC table. The three-match series will begin in Potchefstroom on 6 May. The first of the five T20Is will then be played in Pretoria on 15 May.
