Tamim Iqbal named as Bangladesh's ODI captain

Bangladesh news

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have announced that opening batsman Tamim Iqbal will take over from Mashrafe Mortaza as ODI captain.

BCB President Nazmul Hassan delivered the news after a meeting of the board on Sunday 8 March.

"Masrafe Bin Mortaza has recently stepped down from the ODI captaincy after a fantastic tenure," Hassan said. "I firmly believe that the achievements in the one-day format would not have been possible without him leading the team. Now is the time for someone else to take over the reign and carry Bangladesh forward.

"We have selected Tamim as captain expecting him to lead the team long-term."

Tamim has previously captained the ODI side in three matches, during an injury lay-off for Mortaza during which Bangladesh toured Sri Lanka. He will be hoping to improve on the results of that series, which Bangladesh lost 3-0 with Tamim scoring 21 runs from his three innings.

Mortaza confirmed on Friday that he would stepping down from the role at the conclusion of the series against Zimbabwe, the final game of which was played the day after that announcement. Bangladesh swept the series 3-0 to take Mortaza to 50 wins as captain in the format.

Giving his thoughts ahead of taking up the job for the one-off ODI against Pakistan, Tamim was effusive in his praise of his predecessor and optimistic for the challenges ahead.

"This is a massive honour for me," he said in a press statement. "I thank the BCB for trusting me with this responsibility. I am aware that I have huge shoes to fill as Masrafe Bin Mortaza has been a true great for Bangladesh cricket and a model of inspiration as captain for me and all the cricketers.

"The journey that begins now will have its ups and downs. We all want the Bangladesh ODI Team to be successful and when we are victorious it is a celebration for the entire nation. I hope the Board, the fans and the media will support me through the tough moments as well as during the good times."
