Vala, Dai script history for Papua New Guinea

Pair puts together 200 for the fifth wicket to help visitor chase down 305-run target set by Netherlands in ICC Intercontinental Cup match

Vala, Dai script history for Papua New Guinea - Cricket News
Jack Vare struck the winning boundary as PNG scripted a historic win over Netherlands.
Papua New Guinea (PNG) created history by winning its maiden first-class match – a memorable five-wicket victory over Netherlands – in the ICC Intercontinental Cup at the VRA Cricket Ground in Amstelveen on Thursday (June 18).
On Thursday, the third day of the last match of the first round, PNG, resuming on 66 for 2, rode on Assad Vala’s century and a half-century from Mahuru Dai to chase down the 305-run target Netherlands had set it.
The day began with PNG needing 239 runs, and though it lost Vani Morea and Charles Amini early on in the piece, Vala and Dai defied the Netherlands bowlers to take the visitor closer and closer to the target.
Vala was largely cautious, and focused on consolidation during his partnership with Dai. The pair had added 200 runs for the fifth wicket and looked set to take PNG across the line when Michael Rippon trapped Dai in front for 91. His 160-ball knock included eight fours and a six.
Vala then teamed up with Jack Vare, the PNG captain, to wrap up the innings with an unbroken 23-run stand. Vala’s 200-ball 124 was studded with 13 boundaries.

Earlier, Netherlands had scored 209 in its first innings and then bowled PNG out for a paltry 128 before adding another 223 in its second innings.
PNG, playing the ICC Intercontinental Cup for the first time, earned 14 points and is now placed third on the table, while Netherlands, in its seventh appearance in the tournament, is placed sixth with six points in its kitty.
Ireland and Namibia lead the table with 20 points apiece, having beaten United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong respectively.
The winner of the tournament will play the tenth-ranked side on the ICC Test Team Rankings (as on December 31, 2017) in 2018 in the four-match ICC Test Challenge. If the Associate Member wins the series, to be played on a home-and-away basis, then it will become the 11th Test nation.
