In July 1956, Jim Laker produced Test match figures of 19/90 against Australia, a record that may well never be broken. His 9/37 in the first innings was followed up by 10/53, still the best figures for a Test innings.

A great off-spinner, Jim Laker’s 193 Test wickets came at a stunning average of 21.24. Laker will be best remembered for his 19 wickets in the fourth Ashes Test match at Old Trafford in 1956. It was then a record for the best figures, not just in Tests, but first-class cricket itself. Laker finished with 9 for 37 in the first innings and followed that up with all 10 wickets in the second innings to finish with stunning match figures of 19 for 90 off 68 overs.
