JP Duminy returns after an injury lay-off

JP Duminy to retire from ODIs after World Cup

South Africa news

JP Duminy, the South Africa all-rounder, on Friday, 15 March, has announced his intention to retire from one-day international cricket after the conclusion of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019.

Duminy, who announced his retirement from Tests in September 2017, will continue being available for South Africa in Twenty20 Internationals.

Duminy turned out for South Africa in the fourth ODI of the ongoing series against Sri Lanka, returning 1/21 and scoring 31*. However, he had an extended spell on the sidelines before that, and the 34-year-old said that period helped him make a few decisions.

“The last few months on the sidelines have given me an opportunity to re-assess my career going forward and to plot some goals I'd like to achieve in the future," he said.

“While a decision like this is never easy, I also feel that it is the right time for me to pass on the baton. I will still be available to play international and domestic T20 cricket, but would also like to invest more time towards my growing family, who are my number one priority.”

The CWC19 will be Duminy’s third appearance at cricket’s premier event, after the 2011 World Cup in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and the 2015 edition in Australia and New Zealand. He has played 193 ODIs so far and has 5047 runs at 37.39 to show for it, in addition to 68 wickets.

“I have been privileged to live out my dream playing a sport I love, and I am forever grateful for the support I have received from my teammates, coaches, family, friends and fans throughout the years.”

The fifth ODI against Sri Lanka on Saturday, at his home in Newlands, Cape Town, will now be his final ODI in South Africa.
