Sri Lanka tour of Pakistan to go ahead as planned

Sri Lanka news

Sri Lanka's upcoming tour of Pakistan, which is set to feature the first Tests played in the country since a terrorist attack on Sri Lanka's team bus in 2009, is set to go ahead as planned.

Whether the tour would happen had been called into question after Sri Lanka Cricket called for a reassessment of the situation situation in Pakistan, but following assurances from the Pakistan governement, SLC have said they are happy for the tour to proceed.

The calls for a reassessment came soon after Sri Lanka announced their ODI and T20I squads to tour Pakistan, which excluded 10 players who refused to tour the country due to concerns over their safety. International cricket has been played in Pakistan only intermittently since 2009, with the United Arab Emirates serving as their adopted home.

SLC had also received a warning from the Prime Minister's Office, saying they had received "reliable information of a possible terrorist threat on the Sri Lankan team". However, the Major General J.R. Kulathunga, Sri Lanka's national intelligence head, confirmed that no information had been received by the Ministry of Defence or Sri Lanka's High Commission in Pakistan indicating a threat.

The assurances from the Pakistan government include that the Pakistan army will coordinate the security the arrangements, and that the level of protection will be equivalent to that received by a head of state.

The ODI series will commence on 27 September at Karachi.
