ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019, feature

Hit For Six!
-

Having qualified for their maiden ICC Men's T20 World Cup Qualifier, Singapore will look to draw inspiration from their own recent form, which has carried them there.

Overview

Competing against teams such as Nepal and Qatar, few might have considered Singapore to be favourites to top the table at the five-team ICC Men's T20 World Cup Asia Regional Finals Qualifier, but they won each of their three completed matches to secure the lone spot in the 14-team event in the United Arab Emirates.

The side is a good balance of youth and experience. But the onus is on the more senior members, such as skipper Amjad Mahboob and Selladore Vijayakumar, to guide the younger members in the team, some of whom are still in their teens.

How they got here

Singapore won all their five completed games in the ICC T20 World Cup Asia Region Qualifier B. They went undefeated in the Asia Regional Finals as well, defeating Qatar, Nepal and Malaysia to top the table.

T20WC history

Singapore have never featured in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

ICC 360 - Meet Singapore's Surendran Chandramohan

Key player

Surendran Chandramohan – In six Twnety20 Internationals, the 30-year-old has racked up 229 runs at an average of 45.80. In three matches in the Asia Finals, he scored 108 runs, including a half-century. He carried that form into the tri-series at home, scoring 124 runs at 41.33, while striking at 137.77. Can he bring that form and leave him stamp on the global qualifiers too?

One to watch

Tim David – Although only 23, Tim David is probably Singapore's most high-profile player, having featured in a handful of games for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League. He has a superlative T20I record, with 281 runs from six innings, at 56.20. It was his brilliant 43-ball 77 in the all-or-nothing clash against Nepal in the Asia Finals that set up his side's 82-run win. He also made a fluent 41 in the team's historic win over Zimbabwe in the tri-series at home.
